About me:
If I had it my way, whenever anyone clicked the "About" link he/she would immediately get flashed in a rollercoasterseat right next to me. We'd be flying through the air, screaming, laughing, panicing and shake hands when the ride was over. How about that for an introduction huh? I'm sure that rollercoaster ride would break the ice and get things going. But since I don't have the ability (or the golden coins) to pull this off, I'll try my best to write something nice about myself.
Now for the introduction:
My name is Kevin Hensels and I make artwork for people. I've done so since I was 2-years old. When I was 2 I made drawings that I handed out to my parents. But nowadays it's mostly CD packages, t-shirts and posters. And mostly for bands instead of my parents. Actually I've done everything from candypackaging, to designing posters for a club, right to designing artwork for toy-stores. I like it when I can switch between styles and it also forces me to keep learning new things. Making a CD package for a metalband is something completely different than making drawings for a children's book. But I like it equally as much. I currently work as a graphic designer(employed) and decided to build this website to show people how I spend my free time.
I grew up in a small town and my parents decided to buy house in that same town. We used to live in a huge mansion but after a while we moved to a small house that was located right at the edge of town. When I step out of the house I see fields, sheep, cows, some more trees and some more sheep. This may sound boring to all of the citykids out there but I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I like the peace that nature brings and if I walk 400m north I'll be standing in a cornfield, which is a completely different world.
When I was 7 I started skateboarding. I dedicated every bit of free time I had to that sport. A lot of people looked at us as rascals but after a while they saw that we were just having fun and were just playing around. Skateboards all over the world are covered with great artwork. I'm sure that skateboarding was the first thing that pushed me in the direction that I would later choose as a career. I spent hours looking through magazines, redrawing the skateboard graphics and comicbooks that I liked most. I must have drawn Wolverine and Superman about a million times.
My parents saw that I liked to draw, and sent me to artclasses on weekends. Which I absolutely loved. My friends were there, I could do what I loved and I learned a lot of new techniques. I have a visual defect since birth which has always left me interested in things that triggered the visual perception within the eye. I've always wanted to create "nice and beautiful" things for myself and also as fast as possible. They reason for that is that I'm very aware of the fact that it all may end soon. So all my free time I had went to skateboarding and drawing.
The artclasses that I took got more serious and I graduated from the art-academy with honours. I made an installation about the influence of war on children, and the piece got picked as the best out of 40. Being just 12, that was a big deal for me. My parents and teachers saw that I had the talent to go to the "highschool of arts" in Hasselt, and told me that I should try it. I had some amazing teachers there, and the teachers said I should try to get a Master in graphic design and illustration. And so I did. In 2006 I graduated at the PHL as a Master in graphic design and illustration.
Besides art I'm also very interested in travelling, astronomy, animals, bassguitars, kung fu and bodybuilding. So if you ever want to meet me in person: Go to the local gym or that local skatepark. And you might just find me there.
Thank you for your time.
Kevin.
